YORK, PA - Chair of the Democratic Party of York County, Chad Baker, issued the following statement regarding the recently passed federal funding bill:
This legislation poses a profound crisis for millions of Americans. It will eliminate Medicaid funding, SNAP benefits, and crucial funding that sustains rural hospitals. This action underscores the Republican Party’s prioritization of the interests of wealthy individuals and billionaires over the well-being of ordinary citizens.
Individuals in York County who risk losing essential benefits due to funding reductions should feel deeply betrayed by President Trump, Congressman Scott Perry, and Congressman Lloyd Smucker. These elected officials initially pledged to oppose cuts to Medicaid, subsequently claimed to reduce costs and increase compensation, and asserted their support for the average American.
Regrettably, this bill serves as a stark reminder that the Republican Party has consistently disregarded the needs of its constituents. Those who diligently provide for their families and ensure their health and well-being have witnessed a majority of Senators and Representatives abandon their responsibilities.
Six months into this presidency and the current administration’s tenure, the nation has experienced more setbacks than gains. The situation appears to be deteriorating further.
Congressmen Scott Perry, Lloyd Smucker, and Dave McCormick, along with those who voted in favor of this bill, should empathize with the challenges faced by York County residents struggling to make ends meet. It is highly unlikely that they would survive beyond a day if they had to walk in the shoes of working class Americans. They certainly have failed to fulfill their primary electoral mandate—to represent the people of York County, Pennsylvania, and the nation as a whole.
